Free Lake and Stream Education June Events

Lake and Stream Lovers and Friends,

Our good friends, Jo Latimore and Erick Elgin, from Michigan State University will again be with us starting Wednesday June 24.  Mark your calendar for the following unique events and opportunities.  If you know Jo and Erick, you know your time at these events will be well spent, interesting and enjoyable!!

Wednesday June 24, 5:00pm at Alpha Brewing Company in downtown Alpha.  Will repeat the very popular story-telling, lake trivia and socializing in a family friendly environment.  Light hearted but educational and fun.  Jo and Erick have been on and in many Iron and Gogebic County lakes and many other UP lakes over the years.  Come with your questions about your favorite waters; they will have “been there, done that” insights to help you to better understand and enjoy your favorite places.  We will provide free snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

Thursday June 25, 9:30-11:30 am at the Bates Township/Sunset Lake Park boat landing off of Sunset Lake Road to Park Road.  After an introduction on shore, then walk in the water to learn about aquatic plant identification and phone apps that help do this.  Load iNaturalist on your phone if you like.  Free, just show up, learn and enjoy.  If you have ever been on a lake with Jo and Erick you know this non-strenuous event will be a treat.  Water shoes might be nice but not required.  Rain or shine. Bring kids and enjoy the playground and beach (no lifeguard on duty).

Friday June 26 events may be offered later.  We will update you later.

Saturday June 27 9:00 – 4:00 at the Crystal Falls Township Hall at the corner of US2 and US141 in Crystal Falls: A unique opportunity to learn about aquatic invasive species management in the western UP.  A  team of experts will join Jo and Erick to discuss important aquatic invasive species (AIS) management topics.  Flyer attached. Whether your favorite lake community is currently coping with an aggressive non-native species or monitoring to make sure an AIS doesn’t take hold you should make this a must-do event.  Learn what is going on in the area with AIS and how to protect your favorite lake.

Registration needed:  By June 20 send an email with the names of participants to iclakesandstreamspartnership@gmail.com, or click on our email address in the attached flyer to automatically launch an email to the Partnership. One suggestion that might make it easier to get all the valuable information and insights from this event would be to enlist a few friends to split up the day. One person could stay for two segments, another for two segments, and a third for the last segments. If you choose to participate using a team approach just indicate that the people in your email are coming as a tag team.  If you have questions, call Vicki Browne at 906 828-5207.

Sunday June 28  11:00am at the Watersmeet Township Office, N4689 1st Street just a block west of US45 right in town.  This event is timed such that weekenders will have time to return home afterwards.  Flyer Attached.  Free.  Another unique event hosted by our good friends and neighbors the Invasive Species Control Coalition of Watersmeet: Not Just Loons, Lakes and Us”.  Jo and Erick will join with other experts to show and tell what makes loons thrive on our local lakes and how you can help.

Watch for further news and reminders about all these events but register for the June 27 event now

Bring friends, meet new ones and learn that we are all in this together as our communities enjoy and value our local lakes and streams.
